Creating more volume in dreadlocks is not about simply adding extra hair, but about a smart and well-thought-out build of the entire set. Through proper sectioning, extra attention to the crown, and strategically lengthening or reinforcing the dreadlocks, we create a full, natural look that stays beautifully balanced.

In this blog post, we explain step by step how we build volume into dreadlocks.

Proper sectioning: the foundation of a full head of dreadlocks

Everything starts with how the hair is divided. Sectioning determines how many dreadlocks are created, how full the hairstyle looks, and how evenly the volume is distributed.

We always work with clean, even sections for a professional and polished result. Square or slightly staggered sections create more body and a fuller appearance. Sections that are too large result in fewer dreadlocks and less volume, while extremely small sections can create very thin dreads that tend to fall flat.

The better the sectioning, the fuller the final result , even without adding extra hair.

Installing the crown correctly: essential for volume

The crown is one of the most important areas for achieving a full look. If this area isn’t built properly, the hairstyle can appear flat, even if the rest of the set looks great.

At the crown, we often create slightly smaller sections to allow for more dreadlocks and better coverage. We also ensure that the roots are installed firmly yet comfortably, without tension or gaps.

A well-built crown instantly adds lift and makes the entire set appear fuller.

Lengthening thin ends with natural hair

Many people have dreadlocks that become thinner toward the ends. This can make the hairstyle look less full, especially at the bottom.

When needed, we lengthen the ends using natural hair. This not only adds a bit of length but, more importantly, thickens the tips, giving the set a fuller and healthier appearance.

Since volume is most noticeable at the bottom, this technique often makes a huge difference without needing to add extra dreadlocks.

Adding extra volume with single and double ended dreadlocks

Another way we build volume is by placing single ended or double ended dreadlocks in between the natural set.

Double ended dreadlocks instantly create more body, while single ended dreads are more subtle and blend very naturally with the client’s own hair.

You can choose locs that are fully dreaded to the tips for a uniform look, or combine them with long loose ends. Loose ends add extra movement and volume at the bottom, creating a soft yet full finish.

We can order these for you, custom make them for your set, or you are welcome to bring your own to your appointment.

Creating volume is all about smart building

For us, a full dreadlock set isn’t about adding as much hair as possible — it’s about combining the right techniques:

– clean and thoughtful sectioning
– extra focus on the crown
– extending thin ends with natural hair
– strategically adding extra dreadlocks
